Malignant pleural mesothelioma types of cancer normally takes 20(twenty) to 50(fifty) years to form or grow after a person's first contact to asbestos. Due to  this delayed period of time, this cancer disease normally affects the patients over 75 years of age.

The pleural lining of the lungs consists of two layers:

  • The outer layer lines cover up the entire chest cavity below the ribs.
  • The inner layer may covers up and helps to protect the surface of the lungs.

A new method of administering chemotherapy known as heated intrathoracic chemotherapy, also called HITHOC, is applied directly to the pleural cavity after surgery. The chemotherapy drugs are heated before they are performed across the lung cavity.


Surgery is used to diagnose cancer, relieve symptoms, and remove tumors. A common diagnostic surgery includes thoracoscopy, which is a minimally invasive procedure for collecting tumor tissue samples for biopsy examination.

Patients diagnosed at a later stage of the disease may benefit from therapeutic surgery to control the symptoms. A thoracentesis is a minimally invasive surgery that removes fluid from the pleural cavity through a tube inserted through a small incision in the chest. A pleurodesis also removes the pleural fluid, but it takes the process one step further by merging the two layers of the pleura and eliminating the pleural space. This prevents the recurrence of fluid formation known as pleural effusion.
